Biographies to key members of our professional real estate group can be found below.


Samuel K. Freshman, Chairman

Mr. Freshman founded and was the managing partner of the law firm Freshman, Marantz, Orlanski, Cooper & Klein, which is now the Los Angeles office of K&L Gates. Mr. Freshman is also an acknowledged expert on real estate investment and syndication. He has served as Adjunct Professor of Real Estate at the USC Marshall School of Business, and as an expert witness in over eighty cases. In addition, Mr. Freshman is the author of numerous articles on real estate matters. His book, Principles of Real Estate Syndication, is the bible on the subject. He is Chairman Emeritus of Stanford Professionals in Real Estate (SPIRE——a global organization composed of Stanford University alumni working in the real estate industry). Mr. Freshman received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Stanford University and his law degree from the Stanford Law School.


Steven M. Cohen, President

Mr. Cohen is responsible for the stewardship of assets under management and the strategic growth of the investment portfolio. He has over 20 years’ experience in real estate investment, management, entitlement and development and across asset classes including multi family, industrial, retail and mixed use land development. He commenced his career in public accounting working for a large national firm in Washington DC, and maintains an active CPA license in the State of California and multi-state Real Estate Broker licenses. He graduated from Indiana University, Bloomington in 1992 and continues to be active with alumni organizations and volunteer efforts Junior Achievement.


Damon Saltzburg, Corporate Counsel

Mr. Saltzburg is Corporate Counsel and responsible for the company’s legal affairs including acquisitions, financing, and leasing matters as well as ownership structures and entity formation. Prior to joining Standard Management, Mr. Saltzburg was in private practice with Saltzburg, Ray & Bergman, LLP in Los Angeles, for over 20 years. At the firm, Mr. Saltzburg developed a broad commercial experience with a specialization in real estate, bankruptcy and receivership law. Mr. Saltzburg is a graduate of University of California at Berkeley (B.A., 1989) and Boston University School of Law (J.D., 1992), where he was editor of the Law Review.


Sonia Carrillo, Vice President Administration

Ms. Carrillo is responsible for all administration functions including employment planning and new hire orientation, company benefits, payroll, vendor management, IT and systems coordinator, workers’ compensation insurance and COBRA administration. Before coming to Standard Management Company, she worked for CB Commercial and was the COBRA administrator for over 350 people. She is the Corporate Secretary for Standard and a Notary Public.


Robert Fleischer, Vice President Construction & Capital Projects

Mr. Fleischer is responsible for all major development and construction activities for the company’s multi-family, commercial and industrial properties. He also coordinates acquisition, due diligence and environmental compliance operations and manages a number of Standard Management Company’s properties. He has over thirty years of experience in development, acquisitions, construction and property management nationwide.


Tina Derderian, Senior Director of Acquisitions & Lending

Ms. Derderian is responsible for acquisitions and joint venture investments of value-add retail, office and mixed-use properties throughout the Western United States, directs the Company’s national lending platform and raises syndicated capital for investments. Ms. Derderian has 20 years of experience in commercial real estate in both investment and financing. She earned her MBA in Finance from DePaul University, is a CPA, and has a California Real Estate License.


Elliot Askari, Director of Lending & Acquisitions

Mr. Askari is responsible for all acquisitions and lending activities from identification through close including underwriting, presenting to investment committee, making offers, due diligence, and creating the business plan for each acquired property. He earned his B.S. from UCLA in Mechanical Engineering, is a licensed real estate broker with the state of California, and has over 7 years’ experience in development, lending, and asset management.


Tony Kuper, Director Residential Operations

Mr. Kuper started in the multi-family industry 24 years ago working for publicly traded REITS Industry, Equity Residential and Avalonbay Communities. Mr. Kuper has held positions as a Leasing Consultant, Community Manager, Financial Services Manager, Regional Manager and Portfolio Operations Director. Mr. Kuper has a passion for mentoring and empowering employees and developing strong loyal teams while providing quality homes with excellent customer service for the residents.


Olivia Draper, Residential Operations

Ms. Draper joined Standard Management in October 2015 and responsible for the coordination of all residential operations, which includes assisting in overseeing the six assets in Nevada that are owned and managed by Standard Management. Ms. Draper has over five years with property management operation. Prior to joining Standard Management, Ms. Draper worked for Lincoln Property Company, Thomas Safran & Associates, and ZRS Management. Ms. Draper is a licensed real estate salesperson with the State of California.


Craig Walsh, Vice Chairman

Mr. Walsh is responsible for property operations and asset management, including renovation, repositioning, upgrading, and leasing of projects after their acquisition. He has over 35 years of experience in a broad range of real estate activities including property management, rehabilitation, marketing and leasing of apartments, manufactured housing communitie s, motels, shopping centers/malls, office buildings, industrial facilities and mini-warehouse developments. Mr. Walsh is a Certified Property Manager and served on numerous boards of apartment-related associations. He earned his B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Miami.
